The previous Enslaved Album “Eld” had shown a clear evolution, with more frequent atmospheres and longer tracks. In Short, the Norwegians had clearly started a change towards Prog. We therefore expected a certain continuity in the matter, the bands of Black and Death Metal engulfing themselves in this way rarely going back, but Blodhemn (1998) is a return to a purely Black Metal basis.
A little shunned by the old fans who consider this album as below the first, and by the new ones who find it too rough, this fourth album is nevertheless very solid. Admittedly, Blodhemn is undoubtedly less authentic than Vikingligr Veldi, less inspired than Frost, less immersive than Eld, it is the problem of the bands which begin their career with masterpieces, it is a disappointment when they leave simply an excellent disk…
